The irony of a salesperson joining the newsletter game is not lost on me. 😅
I’m also super aware of the thin line between newsletters and spam.
As the author and recipient of hundreds of e-mails a month, I appreciate the need to be discerning. I act like the bouncer of the night club that is my inbox. Marketing faff? Sorry, not on the list. Delete. Productivity App promos? Never. Delete. Last Chance Offers? How about no chance. Delete.
Those select podcasts and digests that make it past the red velvet rope into my clerb, come from creators who I WISH were fam! But they are certainly why I have fantasized of crafting my own newsletter. My reluctance to start was based on a fear of becoming another ‘Unsubscribe’ casualty, not unlike those I dispatch from my Gmail every day.
But as 2024 drew to a close, I kept hearing "Everyone's on Substack now!" And by the sheer number of people I’ve seen join and the quality of their content, I’m convinced this is the best way in. I imagine this is how the kids who jump in the pool first at a frat-house party must feel.
Like a dad trying to do a TikTok dance, I will strive to offer equal parts, compelling insight and humor, so long as you agree to keep me out of your Trash Bin. Do we have a deal?
New beginnings are hard. But we can do hard things.
On the journey of finding my voice and speaking with authority about the industry I know and love, I’ve felt frustrated and intimidated at times. Thankfully, my corner men (and women) have convinced me that both feelings are valid and lessened by the simple act of doing. If Shakespeare started with stick figures, I’ll take my cue from The Bard himself.
